In the photograph it may look like a lily pond to western eyes, but the flowers and pads are of the lotus, so important to Buddhist mythology. Beyond, the picture shows Buddha dispelling Mara (evil) which has interrupted his meditation. The gesture is simple, just reach down with your right hand and touch the earth, metaphorically and actually grounding yourself.
