Perhaps one of the most enduring images of the American Southwest, immortalised in spaghetti westerns and folklore, the buttes of Monument Valley are a testament to tenacity. Water once flowed before this was desert, and wore away the rock leaving only these scattered buttes and mittens (the rock formations that look like, well, a mitten) and hands (yeah, like hands).
